Why is the project needed?

People with learning disabilities are still much more likely to be underweight or obese than the general population and are described as having a high level of overweight status and increased likelihood of associated health risks such as diabetes.

Obesity amongst People with Learning Disabilities is still on the rise. In fact fewer than 10% of people with learning disabilities in supported accommodation eat a balanced diet with a sufficient intake of fruit and vegetables.

The aim of the project:

To promote wellbeing and healthy eating to people with and without learning disabilities.

Healthy eating will be promoted by the growing of vegetables.

This will increase the consumption of fruit and vegetables to the recommended intake of “Five a Day”. If this can be achieved it will help reduce health inequality by reducing levels of obesity.

Currently we are building new beds from secondhand scaffolding boards kindly supplied by John at Friends of Everton Park, and hope to start our vegetable growing sessions early April. We will announce how you can join in nearer the time.

What you will achieve:

Connect…

The gardening sessions are open to all so that you will get a chance to mix with other people you might otherwise never meet. The planters and other facilities will be shared, which encourages teamwork and planning.

Be active…

Gardening is a physical activity and so will provide a way for you to get active and to get healthier and feel good about yourself.

Take notice…

The sensory garden will provide an excellent chill out space for you to take a break to sit back and take notice of this tranquil green space.

Keep Learning…

The garden activities will be facilitated by an experienced gardener and as such provides a great opportunity for you to learn a new skill and overcome new challenges and is a good way to keep your mind active.

Give…

There is an opportunity for individuals to give some time by volunteering and you can share your experience and lend a helping hand or two.

Hi this project sounds amazing. I'm holding an event at FACT in April on the theme of food, growing and culture. Would you be interested in coming along and talking about the project?
